ABSTRACT

Redevelopment of brownfields, landfills, and former industrial sites increasingly requires layered vapor intrusion (VI) mitigation to ensure long-term indoor air protection. This presentation highlights integrated systems that combine gas vapor barriers, sub-slab venting/depressurization, blowers, and indoor methane sensors to address complex vapor and methane conditions.

Using recent East Coast projects as examples, the talk will outline how each layer functions, when active components are needed, and why single-method approaches often underperform. Key topics include barrier installation, passive versus active venting design, blower use for pressure field extension, methane sensor placement and alarm thresholds, and essential QA/QC steps such as smoke testing and commissioning.

Attendees will learn how coordinated, multi-layered systems improve reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance across diverse redevelopment scenarios.
